Nourishing Chocolate Shake

My family occasionally request sweets. We usually have lack of sweet goodness in our house because the bulk of my cooking time is spent preparing nutrient dense meals (and most of the time I’m out of time for a dessert!). Now don’t get me wrong… I love dessert, especially a chocolaty one. I mean who doesn’t? But with EVERYTHING and I mean almost all desserts contain HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) and the recipes for homemade ones usually contain a load white sugar. Solution – think  nourishing chocolate shake! It can be tasty while at the same time nourishing and caring for our kids body. Yep, you heard me right. A chocolate shake can be nourishing and healthy! Thick, rich and just the right amount of sweetness, with NO sugar. Nope…..just naturally occurring sweetness from bananas and dates. Dates pack a punch of potassium, calcium, magnesium and other essential minerals as well as dietary fiber, amino acids and vitamins. They are naturally sweet and are ... [read more]

Homemade Vanilla Granola

My little sister is visiting this week and she's requesting cereal! Hmmm...we don't normally eat cereal and my kids aren't yet old enough to ask for it (I don't even think they know what it is.) But it got me thinking is there was something I could make that would be similar. Granola....of course. It's crispy crunchy and great in a bowl covered in raw milk or dolloped with fresh vanilla yogurt. She totally approved and it was so good that we went through the first batch in under two days! This recipe is just sweet enough, delightfully crunchy and pretty frugal too. Most of you will already have most of these ingredients in your pantry and this recipe is so easy, you can play with the ingredients and add in other flavors, nuts etc. Granola doesn't have to be boring. So ditch the over-priced, sugar-laden store bought granola cereal! Seriously, that stuff has more sugar in it than a candy bar. With homemade granola, you have complete control over the healthy ... Homemade Blueberry Ice Cream

Our big move... After the big move to our new 20 acre property and the acquisition of my sweet Jersey girl named Belle, things have finally started to settle down on the new homestead. I still have 1,000,000,000,000 Pinterest inspired dreams of where and how my dream garden is going to look and a notebook full of ideas of where and how we are going to put a new pig, but I am back to a somewhat of normal routine with the kids. Not that any schedule is is ever normal with 2 toddlers, but I try! One of those includes making fresh homemade ice cream on the weekends. Rich raw milk, combined with a bounty of fresh blueberries we gleaned this summer is truly a match made in heaven. I say it's my treat for the kids on the weekend, but secretly I think it is momma who enjoys it the best! Fresh berries! Fresh berries bring back memories of being a kid and picking as many berries as me and my sister could find. We would bring them back so momma could make us a treat, ... [read more]

Fresh Peach Crisp

So this is the time of year where the air is warm and all the fruits start to sing! The farmers market is bursting at the seams with bountiful locally grown produce. 'Tis my favorite time of year. It's also the time of year to make peach crisp. It's just bursting with Spring. If a dessert can even do that? This one totally can. It's not overly sweet and has the perfect crunchy top. I even have it for breakfast on occasion. It's that. dang. good. If you wanted it to be even better, you could serve it with a scoop of fresh made ice cream. But you may fall into peach heaven and not come back for the rest of the day....or at least until there is no more peach crisp. Disclosure: Do NOT make this when you have dinner guests...they will leave none for you! PEACH CRISP: - 5 peaches peeled and sliced - 2 tbs sucanat or rapadura - 1 tbs lemon juice Topping: -2/3 cup sprouted flour -1 cup rolled oats -2/3 cup sucanat or rapadura -1/3 cup pecans -8 tbs ...
